What Is An MP3?


Remember the good old days when people had to carry those huge music players around, or those CD players, which were pretty handy for its time, but tilting it could result in lapses in the music as the laser erred in reading it. Now, MP3s that are the size of your thumb can carry over thousands of songs, in high quality, anywhere and everywhere. Some MP3s can even allow you to view photos and videos; they have calendars and alarms and even mobile and internet services.

So why are they called MP3s? Well, the MP3 is actually a file format, sort of like a type of file that changed the way music was distributed in the mid to late 1990s. The MP3 or MPEG Audio Layer III is actually a method of music file compression. MPEG stands for Moving Picture Experts Group, a group that compresses the large video files that include the DVD and high definition videos. Using this system, music files can be compressed to very minimal storage, while keeping the quality almost near the original audio CD. This trade for space from quality allows people to carry music in hundreds and thousands and enables easier file download from the internet. 1 Gigabyte can store around 250 songs. This is much more convenient than carrying CD players and CDs, which usually held only 20 songs.

Unlike the CD players and other old players that required laser or the like to read files, the MP3 is just a storage device that has a software that allows users to transfer files to it from a computer or laptop. More MP3s nowadays are rechargeable, contrary to the old ones that required a battery. Since even the old MP3s required a USB port to transfer files, people suddenly realized that it was possible to use the computer’s power supply to power up the MP3 and thus lead to the built-in battery on the device.

So how does a player actually play the songs? Well, first the player extracts the specific song from the memory, then using an algorithm it decompresses the file encoding and then runs this though a digital-to-analog convertor, thus converting it into sound waves and then uses an amplifier to increase the amplitude of the wave, enabling it to be heard.

The playlist is a list of songs chosen that want to be listened to. Usually the player will play the songs randomly, or by song names or dates added. However, the playlist allows you to group songs into orders that you want them to be played in. It is quite similar to the folder system except that a playlist is the final level that can be organized. For example, you can have a favorites playlist, a rock playlist, a jazz playlist or a pop playlist. Looking back at the good old days, we should be thankful that even music has become all too convenient.
