What is an internet browser?
Internet browsers are applications that let us view the webpage
and interact with it. All you need to do is type the Uniform Resource
Locator or URL of the desired webpage in the address bar of the
browser, and it directs you the page. There are different browsers for
different platforms and with multiple features.
Internet Explorer comes with
Windows. The latest Internet Explorer 8 comes with Windows Vista. There
are other versions of it as well.
Mozilla Firefox is another very
popular internet browser. Mozilla Firefox 3.6 has emerged as the most
successful alternative web browser since the “browser wars” ended
between Internet Explorer and Netscape.
Google Chrome is Google’s very
own internet browser and has gained popularity of late due to its fast
start-up, quick loading and speedy searches. It is supported on Windows
XP, Vista and 7.
Opera has managed to weather
the browser wars since its original release in 1996. Opera is
full-fledged internet suite with web, email, news (usenet and RSS) and
chat with features for new switchers and power users alike.
Apple stunned the world in 2003 when they announced a browser named
Safari for Mac OS X. Safari is also available for Windows.
Some popular Macintosh browsers are Camino and ICab. Camino goes by the
slogan “Mozilla power, Mac style.” It has been designed to bring
Mozilla’s technology into harmony with Os X. ICab is the only modern
web browser built for Classic Mac OS.
Linux/Unix Internet browsers include Konqueror and Galeon. Konqueror is
a highly customizable browser and also runs under GNOME or desktop
environments. Galeon focuses on web features forpower users. It’s
slogan is “The web. Only the web.”
Some cross-platform browsers, which can be run on Windows, Mac as well
as Linux, include SeaMonkey, Flock and K-Melon. SeaMonkey is in the
form of a suite, and has html composer and email client built into it.
Flock is a social browser built on a Firefox core that integrates web
services for blogging, photo sharing and bookmark sharing. K-Melon was
launched to create a lightweight web browser for Windows using the
Mozilla core.
